Amber Burst started as the term my husband used to describe my eyes (I have blue-green eyes with the “amber burst” surrounding the pupil), but I decided to use this as the name of my blog for a different reason. Amber is a color / stone that has many meanings. It is considered a color of strength and purpose, often seen when a person is seeking change or personal development. Amber as a stone symbolizes the sun’s energy and therefore is suitable for awakening joy and stimulating light and warm feelings. Amber increases creativity and helps accept the inevitable changes in life. It is considered an excellent stone for eliminating self-imposed barriers and building positive attitude in our own abilities. A burst is an explosion or a period of intense activity. What started as a term to describe my eyes has become a fitting metaphor for the changes in my life I want to make and the new exciting path I am embarking on.
I was raised in Northern Virginia and started my working life following a typical corporate career path in Finance/Accounting, obtaining both a CPA license as well as an MBA from Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business. Always the independent child, I moved all the way across the country from my parents and siblings – moving to San Diego immediately after getting married. After having two children and continuing in the corporate rat race, I began yearning for a simpler lifestyle more rooted in family and community. Following conversations with my husband over drinks one date-night, we agreed to search for a new home where we could build an addition or guest house for my parents to come live with us permanently. The property we bought is on a full acre and has opened the door for some serious gardening and “lite homesteading”. In this blog, I enjoy sharing my journey towards multi-generational living, organic gardening, and other homesteading / DIY adventures as I try to balance my corporate career with being a mom and striving towards a simpler, more sustainable lifestyle.
